The patrol unit of the sheriff's office consists of three patrol sergeants and twelve patrol deputies who provide seven day a week, 24-hour service to the citizens of Isanti County. Patrol deputies are required to be licensed by the Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board and must meet mandated selection standards prior to being appointed as a peace officer. After appointment, deputies must attend a minimum of 48 hours of in-service training every three years. Deputies must have annual training in use of force and firearms training. Isanti County deputies answer a variety of calls for service and have full county-wide jurisdiction. In addition to typical law enforcement responsibilities, deputies serve civil process papers, transport prisoners, testify in court, and are often assigned to court security for high profile court proceedings and trials. In addition to law enforcement duties, deputy sheriffs also are assigned to specialized duties, such as firearms instruction, use of force instruction, and S.R.T. (Special Response Team).
